MCJ Film Club

This is a film club with an ambition to foster a knowledgeable and vibrant appreciation of the art of film through a pledge to exhibiting, appreciating and analyzing the very best of contemporary and classical cinemas covering various categories of the mainstream, national, international cinema and documentaries.

MCJ Film Club is operated and participated by students of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Dhaka. This club organizes regular film screenings and post-screening discussions open for the members of the club. Besides its weekly screenings, the club organizes seminars, workshops, study circles, film festivals, open shows and other film related activities.

MCJ Film Club started its journey back in 2004. Prof. Dr. Fahmidul Haq was the founding moderator of this club. Now, Associate Prof. Sabrina Sultana Chowdhury is playing the role.

Movie Screening

Each Week the club goes on screening at least one movie for its members which can be either contemporary or classic. After watching it with utter enthusiasm, the members are asked to express their opinions or reviews on it. The best reviewer is then given reward by the club authority. Hence, the club is playing such an amazing role to encourage its members to watch some really good movies.

Director`s Meet

Each month, MCJ Film Club exclusively holds a director’s meet after the weekly screening. The maker/director/artist of the film usually shares his/her views on the film which discusses matters, issues and sectors related to the film. Filmmakers and actors like Tareque Masud, Morshedul Islam, Zahidur Rahim Anjan, Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Kabori and Fredous have attended different programs organized by the club.

Landmarks

In the year 2005, MCJ Film Club organized a day-long article presentation and discussion session. Film scholars along with Zakir Hossain Raju, Fahmidul Haq, Lotte Hook, A-Al Mamun, Matin Rahman etc presented their papers at that conference. Amjad Hossain, Chashi Nazrul Islam, Kabori, Giti Ara Nasreen and others discussed in the papers.

On 2007, the “Tareque Masud Speech” was organized by MCJ Film Club.

During the Shahbag Movement, MCJ Film Club was one of the key film clubs screen films on liberation war at Projonmo Chattar.

On the 50th anniversary of the department, MCJ Film Club organized a two-day long film festival.

In the year 2014, after the death of British Media Theorist and sociologist Stuart Hall, the club arranged a screening and discussion session on his life. At the program, the documentary ‘Stuart Hall Project’ was screened. Dr. Gareth Stanton, the faculty of the Dept. of Media and Communications, University of London, discussed on Stuart Hall after the screening.

On August 29 2014, “Tareque Masud and Mishuk Munir Memorial Speech” was arranged in memory of the pioneer filmmaker and cinematographer. On the same year, a director’s meet was arranged with German Filmmaker Rafael Stemplvasky. His film ‘Dendrologium’ was screened at the program.

On October 03 & 04, MCJ Film Club organized a big event named Eshiyo Cholochchitro Utshob 2016. It was a two-day long film festival to mark the magnitude of Asian films and also to popularize them among the general students. Films from the six countries of Asia including Bangladesh, India, Iran, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan were screened at TSC auditorium during the festival days. A souvenir was published on the occasion of the festival. This souvenir contained brief articles on several pioneer filmmakers on the Asian region.
